As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta began to realize the importance of the prestige, good will and cooperation of women who, for various reasons, were not members of any Greek-letter organization. Under the administration of Soror Lullelia Harrison, the first Amicae chapter was organized in Omaha, Nebraska in 1947 making Zeta the first sorority in the National Pan-Hellenic Council to organize an auxiliary group. Zeta Amicae are affiliated through local chapters. In 1948, the first official Amicae group was chartered by Lambda Zeta in Houston, Texas.
Today, the Zeta Amicae Auxiliary of Southaven is a cherished extension of our chapter’s commitment to service, sisterhood, and community empowerment. Designed to bring together dedicated women who believe in the mission and values of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., our Amicae Auxiliary strengthens the work of Psi Beta Zeta Chapter through fellowship, volunteerism, and meaningful community involvement.
Our History:
The vision for establishing an Amicae Chapter in Southaven began in 2012. On December 10, 2012, the ladies of Psi Beta Zeta Chapter of Southaven, Mississippi hosted their first Zeta Amicae Auxiliary of Southaven Informational, extending eight invitations to potential interests. Although the enthusiasm was present, it simply was not the right time for the auxiliary to take root.
That vision, however, never faded.
In late 2016, the dream was revisited and renewed through the leadership and persistence of Fourth President Neffie Gatewood, along with official Amicae Sponsors Christine Carter and Ruby Owens. Supported by committee members LaKeisha Gatewood, Calandra Jones-Howard, Stephanie Dockersy, and many others, the vision was realized in grand style.
On Friday, February 3, 2017, five remarkable women became Amicae of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. during a heartfelt ceremony held at the Southaven Library. These women were more than supporters—they were our mothers, aunts, dear friends, and daughters at heart, united by love for service and community.
Shortly thereafter, on February 19, 2017, the Zeta Amicae of Southaven was officially chartered in love at the 2017 Mississippi State Leadership Conference in Southaven, Mississippi, at the Landers Center. The chartering ceremony was conducted by 24th International President Mary Breaux Wright, assisted by 19th South Central Regional Director Ernestine Wilson and 15th Mississippi State Director Vanessa R. Banks.
