The Prestigious Psi Beta Zeta Chapter
Psi Beta Zeta Day Resolution from Mayor
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, became the first of the Black Greek-letter Organizations to be chartered in Desoto County, Mississippi, through the chartering of Psi Beta Zeta Chapter. As both Desoto County and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority continued to evolve, the idea arose that a chapter was needed as early as 2006 in the area; however, the journey to chartering was quite an arduous one with being forced to cancel the meetings attempted due to inclement weather and various circumstances and obstacles that slowed the process of chartering this chapter. As a result of the unwavering determination and persistence of seven ladies, a meeting was finally organized on February 11, 2010, at the home of Neffie Gatewood. Two more meetings occurred, and nine more ladies joined the ranks. Despite the obstacles faced, the deferred dream came to fruition on March 4, 2010. After unsuccessfully trying to reach Jacqueline Mason, Neffie Gatewood received the call from Regional Director Constance Hendricks. Desoto County welcomed its first Zeta Chapter, Psi Beta Zeta, with its charter members.
Affectionately known as the “Sweet Sixteen” by Soror Calandra Jones-Howard, the charter members are: Jacqueline Mason (President), Kathy F. Collins (First-Vice President), Balisha Agee (Second Vice-President), Tyjauna Smith (Third Vice-President), LaKeisha Gatewood (Secretary), Neffie Gatewood (Treasurer), Calandra Jones-Howard (Parliamentarian), Rose Walters (Financial Secretary), Christine Carter (Assistant Secretary), Audra Owens (Historian), Teresa Ellis (Chaplin), Hope Jones (Member-At-Large), Natalie Woodard (Custodian), Roshanda Daniel (Nomination Committee Chair), Tasha Nash, and Terri Strong. Preparations were made for both the chartering ceremony and public program, which took place on April 3, 2010, at the Goodman Oaks Church of Christ.
Seven short months later, the chapter continued its growth with the addition of the three youth auxiliaries. As the new sorority year opened in September 2010, thirteen of the “Sweet Sixteen” returned. In 2017, the chapter inducted five women to be charter members of the Amicae Auxiliary, embracing them as additional members of the auxiliary family. More than a week later, the chapter co-hosted the state leadership conference in its birth city of Southaven, where the Amicae Auxiliary was officially chartered. In 2019 Psi Beta Zeta gladly received the Zeta Male Network Auxiliary, completing the final addition of the auxiliary family. In the Centennial sororal year, the chapter has over 100 financial members. Psi Beta Zeta established a strong bond with several organizations and companies in the DeSoto County Community and continue to engage and support all surrounding chapters of the Sisterhood and the blue and white family. Psi Beta Zeta Chapter is The Trailblazer Chapter of Desoto County, Mississippi, striving to foster positive fellowship and inspire excellence; as global leaders, Psi Beta Zeta is building a foundation of service and advancement of our community.
